Item #180: The Opioid Crisis- The Impact on Home Care and Hospice Live Webcast

Drug overdose deaths and opioid-involved deaths continue to increase in the United States. The majority of drug overdose deaths (66%) involve an opioid. In 2016, the number of overdose deaths involving opioids (including prescription opioids and heroin) was 5 times higher than in 1999. From 2000 to 2016, more than 600,000 people died from drug overdoses. On average, 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Home care and hospice providers are in a unique healthcare provider role. We travel around the community, we interact with family members, and for the most part we are providing patient care as solitary practitioners. As this crisis continues to expand, it is imperative for us to recognize the impact of our everyday practice. Join expert Barbara Citarella from RBC Limited for a discussion of the impact the opioid crisis has on home care and hospice.

This live webcast will focus on:

– Patient care issues such as drug diversion
– Future of prescribing practices
– Staff protection in relationship to secondary exposure, and
– Potential issues in a disaster.
